Cervical cancer remains a significant health concern for women worldwide. Understanding its causes and the preventive measures can be a game-changer in reducing its incidence. In this article, we dive into the root cause of cervical cancer and how one can shield themselves from it.
The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
The primary cause of cervical cancer is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This virus, present in many strains, has the potential to transform the healthy cells of the cervix into cancerous ones over time. Now, while the presence of HPV can be a major concern, the good news is that there are preventive steps one can take to reduce their risk of HPV and, consequently, cervical cancer.
1. Get an HPV Vaccine
The forefront defense against HPV is vaccination. There are two significant vaccines available: Gardasil and Cervarix. Both have undergone rigorous testing and have been deemed safe and effective.
For Girls: The primary target for these vaccines is young girls. The immune response is better in preteens, providing a robust defense against the virus.
For Boys: While boys might not display symptoms of HPV, they can be carriers, transmitting the virus to their partners. Gardasil can be administered to boys, reducing the spread of the virus.
The recommended age for these vaccines is during preteen years, but they can be safely given until the age of 26.
2. Regular Pap Tests
A pap test is a diagnostic tool that can identify changes in cervical cells before they become cancerous. Thus, regular pap tests are crucial in early detection and treatment. This step is essential, even for those who have received the HPV vaccine.

3. Practice Monogamy
One of the strategies to reduce HPV exposure is monogamy, i.e., having a single sexual partner. The logic is straightforward: fewer partners mean less exposure to potential carriers of HPV. While abstinence remains the best method to prevent any STDs, including HPV, monogamy can significantly reduce the risk.
4. Use Condoms
It’s important to note that condoms cannot guarantee protection against HPV or cervical cancer. However, consistent and correct condom usage can lower the risk of contracting HPV, indirectly reducing the cervical cancer risk.
While HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, with awareness and the right preventive measures, the risk can be significantly reduced. Everyone, regardless of gender, plays a role in stopping the spread of this virus, thereby safeguarding the health of countless women worldwide. #SDGs #thesocialentrepeneur #healthandwellbeing
